The first film is The Camino Voyage, showing at 6pm in the Town Hall Theatre this evening (Wednesday), which follows a crew including a Writer, two Musicians, an Artist and a Stonemason who embark on the Camino by sea, in a traditional boat built by themselves on an inspiring, and dangerous, 2,500 km modern day Celtic odyssey all the way from Ireland to Northern Spain.
The second is Lomax in Éirinn where Clannad’s Pól Brennan explores how American song collector Alan Lomax came to Ireland on the first stop of a mission to save the folk music of the world will be screened at 8pm in Pálás Cinema.

The Camino Voyage: For hundreds of years, people sailed from Ireland to a Coruña in Northern Spain, and walked the Camino to Santiago de Compostela. This inspiring crew began their own version of this historical voyage in 2014. Pulling into coastal towns and villages en route, camping and cooking as they went, this eclectic crew forged many new friendships. Every community that they connected with opened their doors and their hearts, and the men have, in exchange, inspired them with courage, endurance, storytelling, music, poetry and song in a coming together of people in the most fundamental and ancient of ways. As he continued this Naomhóg journey south in 2017, Danny tragically lost his life when the Naomhóg overturned. Danny’s generous heart and adventurous spirit touched countless lives. Lomax in Éirinn: Alan Lomax had a dream to record and preserve the music of the world. In 1951, he began that mission in Ireland. Lomax in Éirinn uncovers the story behind that trip and shows how it resulted in the first LP of Irish music – the album that brought Irish music to the world.
When he arrived in Ireland in 1951, Alan Lomax aimed to preserve a tradition that few Irish people valued at that time. He wrote: “The last notes of the old, high and beautiful Irish civilization are dying away. A civilization which produced an epic, lyrical and musical literature as noble as any in the world.” Twenty years later, his recordings would help inspire the 1970s revival of Irish music by bands such as Planxty, The Bothy Band and Clannad. Contributors to Lomax in Éirinn include Iarla Ó Lionáird (The Gloaming), John Spillane, Brian Mullan, Ian Lee, Grace Toland, Danny Diamond, Nicholas Carolan and Deirdre Ní Chongaile.
Lomax in Éirinn features exclusive performances from contemporary artists Steve Earle, Clannad, Slow Moving Clouds, The Tulla Ceilí Band and Nell Ní Chróinín (all performing music that Lomax preserved).
