7 Lá – 29th March Live from the Pearse Museum, Rathfarnham

The role of the Irish language in the Easter Rising of 1916 will be the theme of a special live programme to be broadcast on Tuesday 29th of March on TG4. TG4’s current affairs programme 7 Lá, will broadcast live from the Pearse Museum, formerly Patrick Pearse’s Scoil Éanna, between 19:30-20:30 on Easter Tuesday.  Five of the seven signatories of the Proclamation were fluent Irish speakers as were many of the other men and women who fought during the rising.

The role of Conradh na Gaeilge and the cultural revolution that took place in the build up to the rising will be addressed by relatives of those took part in it as well as prominent historians. The stories of ordinary members of the Gaelic League who fought in 1916 will also be told as well as the connection with Gaeltacht communities on the west coast. Of the sixteen leaders who were executed 11 were members of Conradh na Gaeilge and the programme will showcase the organisation’s considerable archive of the period.

Guests will include Éamon Ó Cuív, Professor Micheál Ó Siochrú (TCD) as well as Cathal McSweeney Brugha and a host of other historians, and relations. The one hour live celebration will be presented by Paidí Ó Lionáird and will feature music from harpist Siobhán Armstrong and songs from Aoife Scott.
